Dual Language Immersion

Description of Programs:
The R.O. Gibson Middle School Dual Language Immersion Program is a program in which native English speakers and English Language Learners are enrolled in courses that emphasize literacy skills in both English and Spanish. Academic content core curriculum in the subject areas of English, reading and math are taught in English. The program has English, science and social studies classes taught in Spanish. Lessons are not translated when switching from one language to the other, rather, students learn language through parallel content. The classroom environments are language rich, always supporting the language development of students by using manipulatives, graphs, models, visual aides, and technology in both languages. Electives such as Latin American Culture and the History of Latin American Countries will also be available to students in this program. These electives may also be taught in Spanish.

Community issues and concerns come alive through hands-on service learning projects, while students learn about and practice civic responsibility: the ability to lad, participate, and contribute in a rapidly changing global society. Students will be able to respond to social conscience, ethics, equality, and public service policy while identifying and solving community issues and concerns.

Service learning helps our youth develop their personal leadership skills, empowering them to be confident, assertive critical thinkers and problem solvers.

Through project based and community service learning, learning becomes meaningful, positive and real... students become motivated, responsible, and empowered leaders of their school, neighborhood, and community.
