Mission

The mission of elementary visual art education is to engage the student in active learning while exploring student understanding and appreciation of art.

Overview

In the Clark County School District, elementary art is taught by specialists. The program began in 1986 and is now in its 20th year. The goals, concepts, and skills in the curriculum are aligned with the Nevada Content Standards for Visual Arts. In 1992 the Clark County School District’s elementary visual arts program was featured as an educational model in the awards publication of the Getty Center for Education in the Arts and the National Association of School Boards.

Since the program’s inception, the district has implemented a Discipline-based Art curriculum. Understanding and appreciating art is achieved through four visual art disciplines:
  • Aesthetics - making inquiries into the nature of art
  • Art Criticism - interpreting meaning and making judgments concerning the quality of works of art
  • Art History - studying the culture and history of works of art
  • Art Production - creating imaginative, personal works of art using a wide range of materials and techniques.
