The teaching of foreign languages has changed tremendously over the last four decades. Effective, cutting-edge instruction focuses on the functional use of language and real-world language experiences. Communicative competence is the goal. This is the hallmark of the philosophy of foreign language instruction in Clark County Schools.

Foreign Language in Middle Schools
Depending on staffing, middle schools offer exploratory and conversational foreign language classes. This allows students to experience different languages and to make an educated choice of a second language. Some students are encouraged to begin their high school sequence of foreign language study in the eighth grade.

The middle school foreign language class reflects

  • active use of the new language.
  • realistic language use.
  • integrated development of all four-skill areas… listening, speaking, reading and writing.
  • cultural awareness.
