The School Board meets Thursday at 4:00 in the Greer Education Center, and the public is invited. Also on Thursday, the National Superintendent of the Year will be announced at a national conference in Phoenix. CCSD Superintendent Walt Rulffes is among the finalists. Association names school counselors of the year

The Nevada School Counselor Association named its school counselors of the year, and all three are with CCSD. Eric Boylan of Twin Lakes Elementary is the elementary school counselor of the year; Monica Martin of Garside Junior High is the middle school counselor of the year; and Jill Hersha of Canyon Springs High School is the high school counselor of the year.

School Matters to air Thursday, Feb. 18

Policy Governance and the Nevada High School Proficiency Exam will be among the topics of the next "School Matters" program to air on Vegas PBS Channel 10 on Thursday, Feb. 18, from 8-9 p.m. Click here to submit your questions for the panelists.

CCSD adds 11 Empowerment Schools as of 2010-2011

The roster of Empowerment Schools will grow by 11 as of the next school year, within the existing budget.

"Poetry Out Loud" winners announced

Thirty-one students from CCSD, private and charter schools participated in Poetry Out Loud, a national recitation competition. The top student, Kimberly Goss, a senior at CSNHS West was presented with a $250 check and will represent Clark County at the state level in Reno on March 13. The second place winner was Isabelle Bellinghausen from Green Valley HS. Rounding out the top three was Avion Phillips of Shadow Ridge HS.

LVHS to present "Guys and Dolls" Feb. 11-13

The Las Vegas HS Theatre Department will present the musical "Guys and Dolls" at 7 p.m. Feb. 11, 12 and 13 with a 2 p.m. matinee Feb. 13. For ticket information, call 799-0180 ext. 4051.

Data Quality Campaign gives CCSD high marks

CCSD is one of only eight "Best Practice" school districts nationwide as identified in the Data Quality Campaign's "Data-Driven Decisionmaking Benchmarking Study."

Quality Assurance Framework now online

Superintendent Walt Rulffes recently presented the Board of School Trustees with the Quality Assurance Framework (QAF) for CCSD.  The framework is very similar to a report card for the district as it contains information related to academic achievement.  Additionally, each Area Service Center/Division and each school receives its own report. In 2009, the district showed improvement in 79 percent of the report’s categories. 

Centennial HS student earns prestigious award

Keyawna Danai the Centennial High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) is one of only 10 cadets chosen from over 65,000 cadets nationwide to receive the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement. The award recognizes achievement of scholastic excellence in academics and naval science.

Dr. Rulffes a finalist in Supt. of Year program

CCSD Superintendent Walt Rulffes is one of four finalists in the 2010 AASA National Superintendent of the Year program. The program is co-sponsored by ARAMARK Education, ING and the American Association of School Administrators. The winner will be announced at the National Conference on Education in Phoenix on Feb. 11.
