Pair of Cheyenne HS students named TV show interns

Sam Shad, host of Nevada Newsmakers (a statewide TV show) has selected two students from Cheyenne High School as his Southern Nevada interns. Alex Armedilla and Richard Venegas, both juniors, will interview state lawmakers for the Newsmakers program.

West Prep to hold World Arts Carnival May 23

West Prep will hold a multicultural World Arts Carnival to promote unity, equity and diversity, Friday, May 23, 2:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the West Prep quad. Live music, farmers market, carnival games, arts and crafts will be part of the fun.

CCSD schools honored for physical fitness efforts

Orr MS received the President's Council on Physical Fitness & Sports Demonstration School special honors in March. The school was recognized for promoting physical activity with not only its PE program but also after-school programs and lunchtime intramurals. Meantime, the fcllowing eight schools were honored as Demonstration Centers by Partners for a Healthy Nevada: Orr MS, Culley ES, Dooley ES, Gehring ES, Gray ES, Lawrence JHS, Miller MS and Webb MS.

ATA students honored by architects

The American Institute of Architects Las Vegas Chapter (AIALV) recently challenged Clark County students to design a master planned community for aviation enthusiasts. The site for the design was a 20 acre parcel near the Henderson executive airport. A jury of local architects selected the winners, all of whom are from Advanced Technologies Academy. Alexander Chan was awarded best of school. He and classmate Karen Lee also received Merit Awards for their entries. Advanced Technologies Academy was the recipient of the Colonel Elton Dale Scheideman award for outstanding design achievement as a result of their master plan design. Basic HS social studies students win awards

Basic High School students from social studies teacher Sharon Heflin’s classes took home a number of first place awards from the Southern Nevada National History Day competition March 29th.  First-place winners included Austin Hafen, Joseph Patchett and Preston Hutchings, who won in the senior division group documentary category for their film, “The Happenings of the New York City Draft Riots of 1863.”  Shaunna and Suzanne Padderatz won first in the senior division group exhibit category for their exhibit, “Integration of Clark County School District, Busing and Sixth-Grade Centers.” For individual projects, Charles Combs both received first place awards. Winners may now go on to compete June 15-19 on the national level at the University of Maryland.

ATA students score top 3 spots in competition
