Key Club names three students as Lt. Governors

Three CCSD students will take over as Key Club Lieutenant Governors for each division after the California/Nevada/Hawaii District Convention in Sacramento April 9-11, 2010:
Division 28 North: Tristaniel Evangelista, East CTA
Division 28 West: Yuna Kim, Clark High School
Division 28 South: Catherine Chao, Coronado High School

Enter the CCSD Student Photography Contest

All CCSD high school students are invited to enter the 43rd annual CCSD Student Photography Contest. Entry deadline is April 16 at 4:00 p.m.

Hyde Park MS student wins InvestWrite competition

Andrea Busicescu, a 6th grade student at Hyde Park Middle School, won the Nevada Middle School InvestWrite competition in February. InvestWrite is an innovative national writing competition, produced by “The Stock Market Game” program, that adds a critical thinking component to help reinforce concepts learned in the classroom.

Abigail Bernard of Hughes MS wins VFW award

Abigail Barnard, an 8th grade student at Hughes Middle School, won 1st Place nationally in the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Patriot’s Pen essay-writing contest. Patriot's Pen is a nationwide competition that gives students in grades 6-8 the opportunity to write essays expressing their views on democracy. Annually, more than 115,000 students participate in the contest. Abigail traveled to Washington D.C. with her family on March 6 to receive her first place savings bond for $10,000. Her essay will be published on the VFW website during the upcoming year.

CCSD reports decline in dropout rate

The overall dropout rate for CCSD students in grades 9-12 has improved for the second consecutive year, down to 4.6% in 2008-09 from 5.8% in 2007-08.

Four CCSD students honored for volunteerism

Four CCSD students are among America’s 102 most outstanding youth volunteers to be honored with Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for exemplary acts of volunteerism. Elizabeth Keane of Tarkanian Middle School was named a State Honoree. Ryan Honey of Boulder City High School, Mathew Schuck of Legacy High School and Kevin Wright of Advanced Technologies Academy are Distinguished Finalists.

Hughes MS student wins national VFW award

Friday February 26, 2010 - Students

Abigail Barnard, an 8th grade student at Charles A. Hughes Middle School, won 1st Place nationally in the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Patriot’s Pen contest. Abigail will travel to Washington D.C. with her family on March 6 to receive her first place savings bond for $10,000. Her essay will be published on the VFW Web site during the upcoming year.

Congratulations to wrestler De'Armon Hall

De'Armon Hall, varsity wrestler at Las Vegas High School and student at A-Tech, placed first in the 112-pound weight class at the Sunrise Regional School Wrestling Tournament at LVHS on February 12, 2010.

State releases remediation report

The Nevada System of Higher Education released its Remedial/Developmental Enrollments Report for Summer and Fall, Class of 2009. Among other things, the report says CCSD had the lowest remediation percentage in the state.
