Gina Mason, GATE teacherGina Mason, GATE teacher at Marc Kahre ES, has received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching for the state of Nevada. She spent a week in Washington, D.C., where she was honored by the President and First Lady. Mason is a 12-year veteran with CCSD, having moved here from Ohio where she taught GATE for seven years. She is originally from Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
Colleen Leonard, a reading teacher at Fertitta MS, was recognized by Scholarship America through their Unsung Hero program, sponsored by ING. Ms. Leonard was presented with a check in the amount of $2,000.
Jeffrey Hinton, a teacher at Sierra Vista HS, is the Nevada recipient of the James Madison Graduate Fellowship. Sponsors select one teacher per state who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement, dedication to teaching, professionalization of the field and a commitment to teach the principles of the Constitution.
Jennifer Ranney, a teacher at McDoniel ES, visited Honduras over the summer as part of an educators' tour sponsored by the HEIFER organization. Ranney had the opportunity to learn about the causes of hunger, poverty, environmental degradation and other issues.
During July 2007, a record 12,257 video streams were provided by the Vegas PBS Video Streaming service. This amount is almost double that of the previous year.
