Writing Activities

  1. Welcome - Paula Zier welcomed Mr. Alfaro and approximately 15 guests.
    Bruce Clemmer, Assistant Principal of Orr MS translated in Spanish.

  2. Writing With Our Children - Aline Sibley
    Ms. Sibley presented a workshop to help parents support writing projects for their children
    • Stages of writing and stimulus needed
    • Types of writing needed
    • Activities to do at home
    • Questions and discussions about experiences
    • Parents were asked to write a letter to their child with the expectation of receiving a reply
    • Quick tips for writing and reading at home
    • Packet and journals handed out to each family
    • Helpful websites listed in packet

  3. Raffle - Dry erase boards and writing books were raffled.

  4. Report Card Input - Aaron Markovic, Assessment and Accountability
    Mr. Markovic requested feedback from parents about the contents of the elementary report card.
    • A majority of the parents indicated they had children in elementary school.
    • Parents were provided with a copy of the Elementary Report Card and Student Progress Report.
    • Feedback
      I like the detail of the 2nd page (standards page).
      I like how the report card shows all year (standards page is cumulative).
      I like having the things listed out on progress reports (standards page). I use this with my daughter to help.
      I like how this part shows me what my child needs help on (standards page), but I would like help on what to do next (lessons/websites to use at home).
    • Suggestions
      I would like to know when my child is exceeding standards. It is a good reward to the child to see exceeding.
      Can this be used in middle and high schools?
      Can we get this online? Discussed 08-09 ParentLink access via phone and computer.

  5. Participants were invited to attend next month's meeting at UNLV
