October 25th, a fun packed weekend of making and firing rockets kicked off the Red Ribbon Week celebrations at Jim Bridger Middle School. Sponsored by Drug DeAmand Reduction (DDR), the 801st SEP Cadet Squadron at Bridger, hosted a rocketry weekend. Fifteen cadets from the 801st and the 69th Cadet Squadron from Nellis AFB spent a fun-filled two days learning about the physics of rocket flight and building models that really fly.
Capt. A C Sperling, Nevada Wing Deputy Director of Aerospace Education and AEO for the 801st Cadet Squadron, conducted this two day class as a part of the cadet program missions and also to qualify cadets for the Rocketry badge. Participants were given instruction consisting of lectures and tests along with the hands-on building of five rockets to complete their badge requirements for the Redstone, Titan and Saturn phases. One of the rockets was painted to resemble the Patriot missile. The two stage rocket was the most challenging and cadets found out that it is “rocket science.”
The culminating activity was the Sunday firing of their rockets in the Nevada desert. An Alpha rocket, replica of the Patriot missile and a two stage rocket streaked high above the blazing hot desert floor. At the conclusion of the weekend six cadets had completed all of the requirements for their Rocketry badge. 1st Lt. David Henderson, Squadron Commander of the 801st asked, “Did everybody have fun?” The response was a resounding, “Yes, Sir!”
