Middle/Junior High School Promotion Regulation
On July 17, 1998, the Nevada State Board of Education adopted regulations which prescribe the courses of study and units of credit required for middle/junior high students to be promoted to high school. The State Board was mandated to adopt the regulations for promotion to high school as a part of Assembly Bill 376 passed by the 1997 Legislature. On September 18, 1999, the Nevada State Board of Education revised Nevada Administrative Code (NAC)389.445 regulations prescribe the required units of credit of middle/junior high school students to be promoted to high school. The revised regulations were filed by the Secretary of State's Office on November 4, 1999, and school districts were advised on November 15, 1999. Beginning with the 2000/2001 school year, and all subseqent years thereafter, a pupil who enters the seventh grade must complete one and one-half units of credit in mathematics and one and one-half units of credit in English or reading with a passing grade for promotion to high school. The following infomation is provided to illustrate how this new regulation will affect current students with the educational system.
As of the 2000/2001 School Year
For nine-month schools
Must complete 3 semesters of mathmatics and 3 semesters of English or reading with a passing grade during the 7th and 8th grade years.
For students who may tranfer between nine-month and year-round middle/junior high schools, the following would apply depending on date of transfer:
Must complete 1 semester plus three trimesters of mathematics and 1 semester plus 3 trimesters of English or reading with a passing grade during the 7th and 8th grades.
OR
Must complete 2 semesters plus 1 trimester of mathematics and 2 semesters plus 1 trimester of English or reading with a passing grade during the 7th and 8th grades.
