Curriculum 6th Grade

The sixth grade year is a transition year from elementary school to junior high school.  Students in the sixth grade will be placed on an academic team.  Every student on the team will have the same core teachers.  Placement in core classes is based on the readiness of the individual student for that particular course of study as well as assessment scores and teacher recommendation.  Every sixth grade student will be enrolled in English, mathematics, reading, life science, physical education and computer literacy.  Sixth grade students will have one elective class.

*Final curriculum and elective course offerings will depend upon staffing and pupil enrollment at Helen C. Cannon Junior High School.  Students should have more than one elective choice in mind when pre-registering.  Additional elective courses may be added as needed for educational remediation purposes.

**Each course is a semester.

***Additional electives (i.e. study skills, math enrichment, English enrichment, 8th grade reading) may be available for remedial study in study skills English, reading, and mathematics.  The school counselor may recommend these electives.

ENGLISH

ENGLISH ENRICHMENT 6:  This English class is recommended for students who need additional language and reading development to become successful learners.  Placement in this class is determined by student grades, assessment results on standardized tests and teacher recommendation.

ENGLISH 6:  The sixth grade English program is designed to develop basic skills in spelling, vocabulary, mechanics, usage, and grammar through the use of an established writing process.  It is also designed to improve thinking skills through a variety of methods and materials.  Students will practice their handwriting, speaking and listening skills.  All students will be given a thorough understanding of Analytical Trait Asssment (Ideas, Organization, Voice and Conventions).  The Shirley Method will be used to teach the students about the eight parts of speech. 

ENGLISH ACCELERATED 6:  This course extends student experiences in English.  It is designed to expand skills in mechanics, usage, vocabulary and thinking through the use of an established writing program.  Analyzing literature and higher level thinking skills will be emphasized.  Placement in this class is determined by 5th grade English grades of A’s/B’s, exceeding standards on standardized tests, teacher recommendation and a writing sample.

MATHEMATICS

MATHEMATICS ENRICHMENT 6:  This mathematics course is recommended for students who need additional mathematics development to become successful learners.  Placement in this class is determined by 5th grade teacher recommendation and will be taking concurrently with Mathematics 6.

MATHEMATICS 6:  This course emphasizes basic arithmetic, mathematical skills, and analytical problem solving skills necessary to function successfully in our society.  Career awareness and career objectives will be stressed as students are provided the opportunity for the practical application of skills taught and learned. 

MATH ACCELERATED 6:  This is a one-year course designed to reinforce computation and problem solving skills enabling students to be successful in Accelerated Math 7 the following year.  Instruction in basic arithmetic algorithms, introduction to pre-algebra skills, creative problem solving skills, logical reasoning, and effective communication will be directed toward developing arithmetic competence.  Students will be required to use higher level thinking skills to expand their knowledge and skills for the course.  The use of technology such as calculators and computer software will be integrated into the curriculum.  Placement in this course is determined by 5th grade math grades of A’s/B’s, exceeding standards on standardized tests, teacher recommendation and a strong work ethic. 

READING

READING 6:  Mastering basic reading skills will result in increased success in school and an enhanced enjoyment of one's personal life. This one-year course focuses on an integrated approach to understanding fiction and nonfiction literature and helps students to become strategic readers.  Emphasis is placed on developing comprehension through the application of higher-level thinking processes.  Instruction will provide opportunities for progress in vocabulary development and content area reading skills. 

READING ACCELERATED 6:  This course furthers the study of vocabulary development and fiction and non-fiction materials in an accelerated format.  Placement in this course is determined by 5th grade reading grades of A’s/B’s, exceeding standards on standardized tests, and teacher recommendation.

SCIENCE

SCIENCE 6:  Students will learn skills necessary for successful application of the scientific method of problem solving in each class.  This course is designed to give students a better understanding of the world around them and reinforces the subject material of the course.  It is also designed to utilize a wide range of skills and a combination of home, classroom, and laboratory experiences to help students master such topics as cell structure, the structure of matter, classification, and ecology.

SCIENCE ACCELERATED 6:  This course furthers the study of life science in an accelerated format.  Placement in this course is determined by 5th grade science and reading grades of A’s/B’s, exceeding standards on standardized tests, and teacher recommendation.
