7th Grade
In the seventh grade, students will be placed on an academic team following a middle school model, continuing their transition from elementary school to high school. Placement in the core classes is based on the readiness of the individual student for that particular course of study as well as assessment scores and teacher recommendation. Every seventh grade student will be enrolled in English, mathematics, reading, earth science, physical education, and social studies. Seventh grade students will have one elective class.

*Final curriculum and elective course offerings will depend upon staffing and pupil enrollment at Helen C. Cannon Junior High School. Students should have more than one elective choice in mind when pre-registering. Additional elective courses may be added as needed for educational remediation purposes.

***Additional electives (i.e. study skills, math enrichment, English enrichment, 8th grade reading) may be available for remedial study in study skills English, reading, and mathematics. The school counselor may recommend these electives. |
ENGLISH
ENGLISH ENRICHMENT 7: This English class is recommended for students who need additional language and reading development to become successful learners. Placement in this class is determined by student grades, assessment results on standardized tests and teacher recommendation.
ENGLISH 7: The seventh grade English program is designed so all students will be given a thorough understanding of Analytical Trait Assessment (Ideas, Organization, Voice and Conventions). Student’s writing will be scored in I.O.V.C. and students will be expected to utilize these writing traits in peer editing. This course is designed to improve skills in spelling, vocabulary, mechanics, usage, and grammar through the use of an established writing process. It is also designed to improve thinking skills through a variety of methods and materials. The Shirley Method will be used to teach the students about the eight parts of speech. Students will also practice their handwriting, speaking and listening skills.
ENGLISH ACCELERATED 7: This course extends student experiences in English skills. It is designed to expand skills in spelling, mechanics, usage, vocabulary and thinking through use of an established writing process. It is also designed to enhance literary appreciation through a variety of materials. Literary selections will be studied to generate original and analytical thinking and to develop writing skills. Placement in this course is determined by 6th grade English grades of A’s/B’s, exceeding standards on standardized tests, teacher recommendation and a writing sample.
MATHEMATICS
MATHEMATICS 7: This one-year course is designed to develop each student's mathematical competence in creative problem solving, logical reasoning, and effective communication necessary for responsible adulthood. Instruction in all areas will be directed toward developing this mathematical competence. The use of technology, such as a calculator and computer software, will also be included.
MATHEMATICS ACCELERATED 7: This one-year course is designed for the selected seventh grade student who has demonstrated the ability to apply basic mathematical concepts to problem-solving situations. A problem-solving approach using a variety of techniques will allow the student to explore a myriad of mathematical topics. The use of technology, such as calculator and computer software, will also be included. Students will be required to use higher level thinking skills to expand their knowledge for this course. Students must be prepared to devote a minimum of 30 minutes per evening to complete homework, review, practice and/or study. Placement in this course is determined by A’s/B’s in 6th grade math, exceeding standards on standardized tests and teacher recommendation. Successful completion of this course will prepare the student to enroll in Algebra IH (a high credit course).
READING
READING 7: Mastering basic reading skills will result in increased success in school and an enhanced enjoyment of one's personal life. This one-year course focuses on an integrated approach to understanding fiction and nonfiction literature and helps students to become strategic readers. Emphasis is placed on developing comprehension through the application of higher-level thinking processes, vocabulary development and content area reading skills.
READING ACCELERATED 7: This accelerated course furthers vocabulary development, reading of non-fiction and fiction literature and strengthening the tools necessary to become life-long learners. Placement in this course is determined by 6th grade reading grades of A’s/B’s, exceeding standards on standardized tests and teacher recommendation.
SOCIAL STUDIES
U.S./NEVADA HISTORY 7: This course is an overview of United States/Nevada History. Instruction focuses on helping students develop an understanding of and appreciation for the role of history in our daily lives. Content also includes the study of Nevada, its land and people. Practice and reinforcement is provided in regular homework assignments. An organized notebook is an integral required part of this course. An emphasis on note taking and note taking skills along with completing long-term projects is utilized.
U.S./NEVADA HISTORY ACCELERATED 7: This course is an accelerated approach to the study of U.S and Nevada History. Higher level thinking skills and more detailed examination of history and its affects on its citizens will be studied. Placement in this course is determined by 6th grade reading grades of A’s/B’s, exceeding standards on reading standardized tests and teacher recommendation.
SCIENCE
SCIENCE 7: This one-semester activity-based course is designed to introduce middle level students to general concepts of Earth science, space science, and environmental science through a hands-on, inquiry-driven approach to research, experimentation, and problem solving. This course will present students with fundamental concepts of ecology, geology, meteorology, hydrology, and the application of each as related to career opportunities. Students will also examine the constructive and destructive properties of natural events such as earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, and floods. In addition students will also be introduced to concepts in astronomy, including the Earth’s place in the solar system and the larger universe.
SCIENCE ACCELERATED 7: This one-semester course furthers the study of science in an accelerated format. Placement in this course is determined by 6th grade science and reading grades of A’s/B’s, exceeding standards on standardized tests, and teacher recommendation.
