And the Beat Goes On...
What is our Music Program?
The music program at Gilbert uses as
its basis the Carl Orff-Schulwerk curriculum which explores rhythm,
melody, harmony and expressive qualities through movement, speech or
song improvisation, and the use of toned mallet instruments as well as a
large variety of unpitched percussion instruments of which many have
multi-cultural origins. Students have many opportunities to participate
in music activities throughout our enhanced and enriched fine arts
curriculum.
Gilbert also has a MIDI/keyboarding lab equipped
with 12 student keyboards and a teacher station which are all connected to
iMac computers. All of the student
stations are connected to a Group Education Controller which allows
the teacher to listen to individual students play or to give whole
group instruction. The midi-lab allows our upper grade students to
explore composition, improvisation and notation through programs such
as Music Shop. Students in all grades are given the opportunity to use
the lab to learn piano keyboarding skills. The
lab is also used for group piano lessons.
Fourth and Fifth grade students at
Gilbert have the opportunity to audition and perform with Gilbert's
Select Ensemble, a choral group combining singing, instrument playing
and movement.
Gilbert students also have the opportunity to
audition and perform with Gilbert's Drum Group. The group learns to play
and improvise on percussion and bass instruments.
