A Message from our Principal:

Gilbert Magnet School for Communications and Creative Arts is a unique school with very special students, parents, and staff members.  Some even say it is magic!   Gilbert is a small school of only 450 students in the heart of the Las Vegas community.  Due to Gilbert being a magnet school, the student population is very stable and the staff have the pleasure of getting to know all of the students over a long period of time.  Gilbert faculty are very committed to providing each child with a well-rounded educational experience and a safe, nurturing environment in which to learn.  Students have the opportunity to be involved in a strong academic program where teachers teach the specified Clark County School District Curriculum and place a high value on academic excellence.  Teachers use a wide variety of strategies to accomplish this task, with particular attention to allowing students of various learning modalities, to learn in their preferred manner, and in an optimal learning environment. Students at Gilbert love to come to school!

Gilbert staff  are also committed to using creative arts to develop the “whole” child and providing enriched experiences in Music, Movement, Art, Drama, and Communications.  Our specialists assist classroom teachers on a regular basis with integrating the arts and the regular academic curriculum. Gilbert staff have found that an exemplary creative arts program and excellent academic achievement go hand in hand.  In addition, students at Gilbert Magnet School develop confidence in themselves and their unique talents and abilities through the wide variety of learning activities and extra activities available on-site.

Students at Gilbert have the opportunity for so many enrichment experiences!   Some intermediate students choose to try out for the 50+ member school choir, become part of the ORFF orchestra, and/or become part of the Gilbert Drummers.  Still others apply to be part of the Gilbert Piano Program where students are able to have a weekly piano lesson within their school day.  All students are involved with large-scale school productions twice per year that allow them to sing, dance, play instruments, write scripts, choreograph, act, construct sets and props, and learn to operate the technical equipment (including sound, lighting, cameras, teleprompters, switchers, etc.).  Students are able to access instruction in dance and movement in their PE classes, as well as becoming involved with “extra” performance groups if they so desire. Some students participate in movement events including the CCSD Dance Festival, Jump Rope for Heart (we are the top money-making school in the state of Nevada for this event), and the Movement Marathon (Gilbert version of field day).  Each spring, intermediate students are given the opportunity to take part in the Gilbert Shakespeare Festival by performing two plays.  The younger third graders are responsible for the Green Show.  During the Art Theme, students learn about famous artists throughout history and their specialized techniques.  During an event known as “Chalk on the Walk”, students are called on individually to decorate a section of the playground using what they have learned and/or using their own creative expression.  Some students also belong to Art Club where they work on detailed projects for the school.

Students participate in studio/drama class as part of their weekly instructional program.  Gilbert students get the opportunity to have a regular drama class where they learn to be in front of the camera and exercise their creativity and imagination. They also learn about all of the technical aspects of theatre and television through a daily live TV news program where students are not only the stars, but also do all of the technical “behind the scenes” work.

Participation in an Explorations period four times per year for 9-11 days (40 minutes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) is a unique part of the Gilbert Magnet Program. During this Exploration period, students regroup according to their own individual interests and choices and get a chance to try out something new that they have an interest in.  Some examples of class options for Explorations periods are tap dancing, line dancing, yoga, guitar playing, mural painting, clay sculpture, reader’s theatre, and tennis.

The Gilbert school community is very diverse.  At Gilbert, we celebrate that diversity and feel it is a plus to be able to share our cultures with each other through the school year.  Students and teachers delight in researching aspects of various cultures and individuals from all backgrounds who have made a difference in our world.  Throughout the school hallways, displays hint at the learning that has taken place within the classroom walls.

Gilbert students are exposed to a wide variety of performances by various community groups and cultural organizations.  School-wide assemblies are the perfect opportunity for students to broaden their background experiences and have access to role models involved with the arts.  Field trips are also an important part of the school program for the real world is one of the best classrooms of all!

The staff at Gilbert are caring and dedicated to children.  Many are artists, dancers, composers, actors and actresses in their own right, as well as being phenomenal teachers of academics.  They are at Gilbert because of their philosophy that the arts and communication is an important aspect of a strong educational foundation.  Teachers who work at Gilbert are not satisfied with being adequate.  They strive to be “excellent” every day and “go over and above” every day.  The most important resources are human resources and we are so fortunate at Gilbert to have the best!
