Goldie - Our Resident Desert Tortoise

In the early part of May 1996, former Goldfarb principal, Mrs. Phillips and Pete Ferdig met to discuss the possibility of Pete doing an Eagle Scout project for the new school. They both came up with the idea to construct a desert tortoise habitat in the courtyard area of the new school. The school was still under construction, and many hours were spent looking over blueprints and taking measurements of the courtyard area.

They later met with Betty Burge, President of the Tortoise Group to decide whether or not this whole idea was feasible, and decided that it was. In September 1996, Mrs. Phillips, Mrs. Bennett (a Kindergarten teacher), and Pete met to discuss the writing of a grant to support the construction of the tortoise habitat. The habitat was completed on March 27, 1997. Goldie was introduced and is successfully thriving. The students love to observe her, and she likes to come out and visit with them.
