Dear Hickey Families,
Thank you for a wonderful first week of school!!
Just a few reminders. When it is raining hard and lightening is in the air, I will not dismiss students to walk home. Our students' safety comes first. Parents may go to the classroom to pick up their children. Students who attend Safekey will be released to Safekey. Students who ride the bus will also be dismissed to the bus. Until it is deemed safe to walk home students will not be dismissed from their classrooms.
As I have stated before, we are a Title I school this year. With Title I we were allowed to hire four extra teachers to keep class sizes as low as possible. To keep these funds sustained we need to have all federal paperwork completed. Please complete the Title I Free and Reduced Meal Application, for your family, whether you think you qualify or not. This is part of the paperwork to help ensure we keep theses extra funds. Only one application per family is necessary.
Our "Back to School Night," is Thursday, September 4, 2008, for tracks 2-5, from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. Teachers will be discussing the curriculum, special programs, such as Accelerated Reader, and overall expectations for students. The Parent Teacher Association will be available along with our Music, Art, P.E., and Library teachers, as well as Cynthia Rapazzini, our school counselor, to discuss all our programs including ParentLink.
Next Tuesday and Thursday, Ms. Langenbach and I will be meeting with grades 1-5 to outline our expectations for student success at Hickey Elementary. In the assemblies we will be reviewing school rewards and rules, academic expectations, citizenship, and the Accelerated Reader goals for the coming year.
There will be no school on Monday, September 1 due to Labor Day. Please enjoy your three day weekend.
Sincerely,
David L. Harcourt

Dear Hickey Families,
Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year! I hope you had a safe and wonderful vacation.
On Friday, August 22, 2008, we will have a "Meet Your Teacher," event for all tracks with the exception of Track 1, Grade 3. That will be held on Friday, September 12, 2008, from 1:00-3:00 p.m., prior to students returning on the following Monday.
ParentLink will be available for our students and parents to examine up to date information about their child's grades, attendance, and school announcements. This information will be given at our Back to School Night, September 4, 2008, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Your child's teacher will have the information you need.
There will be an informal meeting for all kindergarten parents in the multi-purpose room on Monday, August 25, 2008 at 9:20 a.m. Mrs. Rapazzini, our school counselor, will present tips on how to make your child successful in school.
If you have requested a track change, we have put you on a waiting list and will contact you when seats become available.
The goal of the school is to have all students reach their potential in the pursuit of providing the best education possible. I want our students, as they move through higher education, to have the opportunity to reach their dreams. Only a strong academic background will allow this to happen. Your support, help, and encouragement is necessary for your child to succeed. In this ever changing world, we must prepare our students to see a world that will be constantly changing, more technology driven, and with strong reading, writing, and math skills. As we head into the 21st Century, we want our students to have all the tools necessary to ensure a lifetime of success.

Dear Hickey Families,
This is the last week of school for the 2007-2008 school year. I want to thank you for your continued support of our teachers and staff.
If you have not received your registration packet for the 2008-2009 school year, please come to the office between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., with the proper registration information.
Track and teacher assignments will be mailed out the week of August 11, 2008. Please understand that we did our best to accommodate your request, but priority was given to students who have siblings in middle and high school. Unfortunately we were not able to accommodate all sibling Track 5 requests, but did try and ensure that they were placed in Tracks 3 & 4 which has time off in the summers so families could be together. Our second priority was to balance classes equally to provide the best education possible for your child. If you would like to be placed on a waiting list for certain track, please write a letter stating your reasons and we will place you on the request list. There will be no track changes at this time.
Due to budget cuts by the state, we will no longer be able to provide our Science Academy or Extended School Science program for the upcoming year.
This will be the first year that Hickey Elementary School is a Title One School. In the spring a committee of parents and my School Improvement Team met to determine how to best use the federal monies. We decided to keep class sizes as small as possible and used the monies to hire five additional teachers to ensure classes are small, especially in grades 4 and 5.
The last day of school will be Friday, August 8, 2008. Students will be dismissed at 12:20 p.m. Breakfast will be served, but no lunches will be served on Friday.
The first day of the new school year is August 25 for tracks 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Have a safe and fun break.
Sincerely,
David L. Harcourt,
Principal

Dear Hickey Families,
Good news! Mrs. Hickey left the hospital, Friday, July 4, 2008 and returned home where she continues her therapy.
Congratulations to the 38 students on Track 5 who choose to surpass 150 Hickey Pride Cards or 125 Accelerated Reader points. Students were treated to a pizza and ice cream party. They also received a certificate recognizing their accomplishments. Recognition parties will be held in August for Tracks 1, 2, 3, and 4.
I want to wish our fifth grade students continued success as they head to Middle School. I am sure you will make us proud.
Parents should have received in the mail, results of the high stakes CRT tests for Language Arts and Math, for grades 3, 4, & 5. Please take time to review your child's results with them. The key to a bright future for your child is found in education. To ensure student success it takes the parents, teachers, and student all working together.
Welcome back Track 4!
If you have not yet turned in your registration for next year please do so as soon as possible. Teacher and track assignment letters will be mailed home in August.
Sincerely,
David L. Harcourt,

Dear Hickey Families,
Thank you for your support of our Parent Teacher Student Conferences for tracks 2-5. 93% of our parents attended with their students.
Teachers spent part of the Staff Development Day reviewing the Interim Assessment Data results for each grade level and planning teaching strategies to re-teach areas of concern.
Track 1 will have Parent Teacher Student Conferences on February 12, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. and all day on February 13, 2008. There will be no school that day for students on track 1; they are to attend the conference with their parents.
Beginning February 1, our students will have an opportunity to be on Channel 3 News on February 29, 2008. On Friday, February 29, 2008 Kevin Janison, Channel 3 Weather Reporter, will be on campus to broadcast the weather live during our Family Literacy Night from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. The top 5 Accelerated Reader Point Earners in grades 1-5 will be invited to participate with Mr. Janison during the weather segment of the news. The contest of AR point earners will begin February 1 and end February 25.
On February 15, 2008 we will begin our last fundraiser of the year. The company, Cherrydale Fundraising, LLC will be working with us; we will be offering gift and food items to be ordered. The money earned will go directly to benefit our students. Proceeds will help with classroom supplies, custodial supplies, and computer software for our students.

Dear Hickey Community,
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. As we enter the winter months our students will probably be spending more time inside.
We have updated our Accelerated Reading computer program over the winter break. Students will now be able to access AR tests from our local libraries and home. In order for students to be able to use the Internet access parents must have signed and returned the Acceptable Use Policy form. Having internet access to Accelerated Reader will give our students access to all Accelerated Reader books available--not only from our library, but all Clark County Libraries and local bookstores. On the back of this letter are tips to keep our students safe on the Internet.
Our next Parent Teacher Association meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 @ 6:00 p.m. in the library. The purpose of this meeting will be to plan activities for the remainder of the school year. We look forward to seeing you there.
Recently the office of Governor Gibbons announced a cut in funding; of 4.5% for all government agencies including public schools. This is a loss of approximately 96 million dollars to the Clark County School District. Here is a list of the purposed potential budget cuts: Full Day Kindergarten, Empowerment, SB 185 Remediation Grants, Educational Technology Commission, CTE Programs, Gifted & Talented, Alternative Program for Disruptive Students, Magnet Program for Deaf / Hard of Hearing, and Performance Pay Program. At this time, I am not sure how it will affect our school, but I will keep you informed on the proposed budget cuts.
This week Parent Teacher Student Conferences were held to discuss the results of the IDMS Testing scores. If you were unable to attend, please contact your child's teacher and re-schedule. The IDMS scores reflect your child's progress in meeting the academic standards for each grade.
Sincerely,
David L. Harcourt, Principal

Just a reminder there will be no school next Monday and Tuesday. November 12, 2007 is Veterans' Day and November 13, 2007 teachers will have a Staff Development Day. Enjoy your four day weekend and have a safe and happy holiday.
Thank you to all of our families that came out for our 2nd Annual Fall Carnival. A special thanks goes out to our Hickey PTA volunteers and Boy Scout Troop 727 for making our booths.
The last day for Track 5 will be Wednesday, November 21, 2007. Track 4 will report November 26, 2007 after the Thanksgiving Holiday.
All grades will be taking the first Interim Assessments within the next few weeks. These tests assess what our students have learned in the first trimester of school. Please ensure that your child is here on time and ready to do their best.
Teachers will be sending out the invitations for the Track 5 Intersession during the third week of November. Our intersessions are focusing on science and literacy. Students will play board games, watch science videos and increase their note taking skills.
Also, teachers will be sending home invitations for Extended Day School for Track 4, the week that they return to school.
Sincerely,
David L. Harcourt , Principal

Dear Hickey Families,
Thank you for your support of our Fall PTA Fundraiser. All of the profits from this fundraiser will be used to purchase Birthday Books for our students, our fifth grade DARE graduation, and other activities that benefit all of our students.
Please join us for our second annual Fall Carnival. The Carnival is from 4:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 25, 2007. There will be games, food, and fun for all. Tickets will be available before and after school the week of October 22-25. Tickets will also be available the night of the carnival.
Progress Reports were distributed to students in tracks 1 & 2 on October 25, 2007. Progress Reports will be distributed every three weeks for our students. The schedule is posted on our web site at http://ccsd.net/schools/hickey/calendar.htm
Attention: Grades 3, 4, and 5
Beginning the first full week in November, we will have Extended School for our students in grades 3, 4, and 5. Extended School will be 3 days a week, on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, from 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm. This after school program will focus on science and literacy. Students will have hands on experience with science games, research, and also keeping science journals. For this free after school program students must be recommended by their teacher.
Track 4 Inter Session:
Also, beginning the first week of November, a free school inter-session will be held from 9:10 - 12:10 each day for students in track four. Students must be recommended by their teacher to attend the inter-session. We will invite fifth grade first and depending on how many instructional staff members we have, proceed to grade four students then continue down to grade 3 students. We hope to provide inter-session available to all tracks when they go on track break. (The inter-session dates will be November 5, 6, 7, 8, 14, 15, 19, 20, and 21 for Track 4 students.)
Sincerely,

Dear Hickey Families:
On October 5, 2007, will be a Staff Development Day for all teachers in the Clark County School District. There will be no school for our students. Track 2 students will report back to school on October 8, 2007 and Track 3 students will begin their track break, and return October 29, 2007. On October 25, 2007 we will hold our Annual Fall Carnival. More information will follow as we approach our carnival date.
Good News! We have received a grant from the State of Nevada focusing on science and literacy. With this grant we will begin an after school tutoring program and planned intersession for students on track breaks. Students will be invited to attend these sessions. Students must have strong attendance, demonstrate a drive to learn, and good citizenship.
Our first intersession will begin the week of October 29, 2007. We will focus on grades 3, 4, and 5. The objective is to increase the connection between science and literacy for our students. In the spring 2008 we plan to include grades 1 and 2.
A special thanks goes out to our PTA volunteer parents, Gina Costa and Darnnella Pancoast, for overseeing the fundraiser.
Sincerely,

Dear Hickey Families,
Thank you for a wonderful start of the 2007-2008 school year. Our students have been terrific and seem eager to learn. Keep up the great work!As many of you are aware, the Clark County School District is short approximately ten thousand students this year. At Hickey we are short 108 students. On September 14, 2007, the student count day for the state of Nevada and Clark County School district will take place. If our student numbers are not where they need to be, change due to a reduction in our teaching staff will be made. We will do our best to impact as few families as possible.
Our first PTA meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at 5:00 p.m. in the library. We will be discussing the PTA fundraiser and Fall Carnival. Track 2 will go on break Friday, September 14, 2007 and return on October 8, 2007. Track 1 will report on Monday, September 17, 2007.
Due to a new report and system this year our first Progress Report will not be distributed until the week of October 8, 2007. Please feel free to contact and schedule a conference with your child's teacher if you have any concerns.
Thank you for you support of our school.
Sincerely,

Welcome to the 2007-2008 school year! Congratulations to our students and staff for making our (AYP) Average Yearly Progress goals for the 2006-2007 school year, especially grades 3, 4, and 5. This year we must show growth in the areas of English LanguageArts and Math increasing the number of proficient students in these areas by close to 12 percent to make AYP.
This will be our first year as a year round school. I appreciate the support I have received regarding the transition. The first day of school for tracks 2-5 will be August 27, 2007. Students will report directly to their assigned classroom. Breakfast will be served beginning at 8:40 a.m. 'Meet the Teacher' will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Friday August 24, 2007. This is an informal opportunity to meet your child's teacher for the coming school year.
Open House for Tracks 2, 3, 4, & 5 will be held on Thursday, August 30, 2007, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. in your child's classroom. Two sessions will be held to accommodate our families. Teachers will be explaining classroom expectations and procedures. They will be discussing the curriculum and strategies to ensure a successful year for your child.
In addition, our specialists in music, art, library, physical education, counselor, and science humanities personnel will be here to answer any question you might have.
I am looking forward to another terrific year. If you should have any questions, please contact the school at 799-1899.
Sincerely,
