Program Summary
Mabel Hoggard Math/Science Magnet has the distinction of being the first elementary magnet school established in Las Vegas and is accredited through the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools. At Hoggard, students participate in a rigorous academic curriculum with an emphasis on science, mathematics and technology. They are taught the art of scientific investigation and mathematical problem solving with the use of computer technology. The curriculum is highly motivational with extensive “hands on” math and science experiences. Students receive extended programs and activities through “Explorations” in art, music, and physical education classes as well as the school’s many outdoor and indoor laboratory programs. Hoggard teachers are trained in MASE (Math and Science Education), and incorporate researched-based teaching and learning strategies into daily instruction. Mabel Hoggard is committed to the success of all children in the program by creating an optimal learning environment that will help them succeed in the 21st century.
Admission
At the elementary level, there are no specific requirements to attend a magnet school. An application must be submitted to the Magnet Schools Department by the specified due date. If there are more applications than there are seats available, a computerized random lottery will be utilized for student selections.
Clark County School District sets aside 25% of the seats for students in grade 1 who live in the attendance zone and/or siblings who apply for a magnet school. If there are fewer geographic preference students and/or siblings who apply for a magnet school than there are available seats, then all of the geographic preference area students and/or siblings will be admitted. If there are more geographic preference area students and/or siblings who apply than there are available seats, Clark County School District will use a separate computerized random lottery to select the students who are given the preference area and/or sibling seats. Notification of student selections will be mailed on or about the first week of April to parents/guardians of every student applicant.
