Carroll Johnston Meet Mr. Carroll Johnston

Carroll M. Johnston was born September 20, 1936, in Mesa, Arizona.   He later moved to Durango, Colorado, and graduated from Durango High School in 1954.   While attending Durango High School, Mr. Johnston served as freshman and junior class president and then as the student body president.   He also earned varsity letters in football, baseball, and basketball.

Mr. Johnston attended Brigham Young University where he graduated in 1958.   He engrossed himself in college activities and earned a varsity football letter for three years.   He also was awarded the Most Valuable Player award in his senior year.   He later returned to school and earned two master's degrees; the first at Northern Colorado University and the second at Northern Arizona University.

His wife of thirty-nine years, Kelda, was also a teacher for the Clark County School District and retired after thirty years.   They have three children and two grandsons.   Two children currently work for the district.

Mr. Johnston has been a resident of Las Vegas, Nevada, since 1959 when he began his thirty-seven year career with the Clark County School District as a teacher at Fremont Junior High School.   After teaching for one year, he spent two years in the U.S. Army and returned to teach and coach at Western High School for the next ten years.   While at Western, he served as a class advisor, club sponsor, teacher, school counselor, dean of students, and coached the football and basketball teams.

Mr. Johnston served as assistant principal at R.O. Gibson Junior High School in 1969.   The following year he served as principal at K.O. Knudson Junior High School where he remained for three years.   He then served as principal at E.W. Clark High School.  Mr. Johnston stayed at Clark for eight years until he was appointed principal at Chaparral High School.  In 1981, he was asked to open the new Green Valley High School where he worked until his retirement in 1996.

Mr. Johnston had a very active parent advisory committee at each school.  He met formally and informally with student groups on a regular basis.  He also routinely found ways to recognize staff, students, and community members for their contributions.  All of his decisions were made with the best interest of the students in mind.

Carroll is presently serving on the Gaming Policy Committee for the State of Nevada and has been involved in several Boys and Girls Club functions over the years.

Throughout his career with the Clark County School District, Mr. Johnston gave his time unconditionally on behalf of the students, staff, parents, and community.  His total commitment to the students of this city has been remarkable.
