Mandatory Student Attire

 

Dear Parents or Guardians:

Carroll M. Johnston Middle School will be implementing a mandatory Standard Student Attire policy for the 2007-2008 school year.

 In order to implement a mandatory Standard Student Attire policy, a school must follow the guidelines of Regulation 5131.  Under this regulation, at least fifty-five (55) percent of the surveys returned from families that make up the population of the student body must agree to implement the Standard Student Attire policy.  Regulation 5131 was followed and families of Carroll M. Johnston Middle School voted to implement a mandatory Standard Student Attire policy.  Information about the policy can be found online at:  http://ccsd.net/directory/pol-reg.

A parent/guardian may apply for their child to be exempt from the Standard Student Attire policy in the following two instances:

1) When the parent/guardian can demonstrate a bona fide religious objection to wearing the Standard Student Attire
2) When wearing Standard Student Attire is inappropriate due to a verified medical condition.

 I encourage you to review and discuss the Standard Student Attire requirements below with your child.  All Standard Student Attire violations will result in disciplinary action in alignment with Regulation 5131 the school-based progressive discipline

Males

·       Pants/shorts in basic colors or black only

·       Blue jeans (sized to fit)

·       Denim pants in basic colors or black only

·       Sweaters in basic/optional colors, solid only (no patterns, no words) worn over approved shirts

·       Sweatshirts only in basic/optional colors, solid only (no patterns, no words) with or without school logo

·       No sweatsuits

·       Shirts, polo/oxford style, in basic colors or gray, solid only (no patterns, no words) long or short-sleeved, with or without school logo, with collars

Females

·       Pants/shorts in basic colors or black only

·       Blue jeans (sized to fit)

·       Denim pants in basic colors or black only

·       Sweaters in basic/optional colors, solid only (no patterns, no words) worn over approved shirts

·       Sweatshirts only in basic/optional colors, solid only (no patterns, no words) with or without school logo

·       No sweatsuits

·       Shirts/blouses, polo/oxford style, in basic colors or gray, solid only (no patterns, no words) long or short-sleeved, with or without school logo, with collars

·       Shorts, skirts or skorts in basic colors or black only

·       Jumpers/dresses in basic colors or black only


The basic colors of khaki, navy and white will be required at all Standard Student Attire schools.  Additionally, Carroll M. Johnston middle school will have optional colors of black for pants and gray for shirts.  Carroll Johnston Middle School will have stricter guidelines as follows:  Pants/Shorts/Blue jeans: no designs, embroidery or writing and may not be frayed, ripped or torn.  Shirts: polo/oxford style must be buttoned – buttonless shirts are not allowed.  T-shirts worn under approved shirts/blouses must be in basic colors or gray only.  Belts: must be worn through belt loops and must be in basic colors, brown or gray.  Stockings, Tights, Leggings, Hair accessories: in basic colors, gray or black, solid only (no patterns or stripes).  All clothing must be worn as designed to fit; no sagging, buttons must be buttoned, and shirt tails must be tucked in.

DRESS AND APPEARANCE

 

  1.  Require the wearing of shoes with soles.

B. Prohibit wearing crop tops (no skin showing between bottom of shirt/blouse and top of pants or skirts), strapless, low-cut clothing, clothing with slits, or tops and outfits that provide minimum coverage.

C. Prohibit wearing clothing with spaghetti straps. All sleeveless shirts must have straps at least three inches wide and cover the shoulder.

D. Require that all shorts, skirts, and dresses must be at fingertip length. If shorts are worn, they must be hemmed and without fraying.

E. Prohibit the wearing of headgear on campus except for designated school approved uniforms or at authorized athletic practices or activities.

F. Prohibit slogans or advertising on clothing which by their controversial or obscene nature disrupt the educational setting. No spiked or studded clothing.

G. Prohibit wearing of outerwear such as coats, mittens, and scarves upon.
entering the classrooms.
