| The purpose of this elective program is to
help third grade students develop a cultural awareness of
different regions around the world. World Traveler incorporates
many areas of the curriculum as the students journey through
literature and informational texts. Students will be given
packets by their teachers containing the materials needed to complete
the World Traveler upon request by the parents. To
complete the requirements of the program each student will: 1. Label and spell correctly on a map the
seven continents and the four oceans. Students will be
tested
on this information in class as they are ready. Completion date is
December 21st.
World Map 2. "Visit" a country on each of
two continents by using nonfiction books, newspapers,
or computer information
services to complete the Travel Letter for each continent chosen.

3. For each of the two countries
chosen, read one fiction book and complete a Book
Response for each.

4. Complete two projects (one from
each country chosen).

Some suggested projects include:
*Visual displays
such as a diorama, mobile, poster, paper-mache sculpture, or
relief map.
* Persuasive writing including a travel
brochure or an article encouraging someone to visit the
country.
*Presentation (5-10 minutes in length) of
customs such as food, costume, dance, or holiday
traditions.
Deadlines:
*Students must successfully label the
world map in class on or before December 21st.
*The Travel Letter, Book Response and
Project
for the first country visited by individual
students will be
completed in class.
*The Travel
Letter, Book Response, and project for the second country visited
must be
completed and turned in on or before
March 14th.
*The Travel Letter, Book Response, and
project for the third country visited must be
completed and turned in on or before
May 2nd.
All
work for the World Traveler will be
completed on or before May 2nd.
