Thurman White Middle School is named in honor of an educator, builder, scholar, and a pioneer...but foremost a dedicated professional who loves people. Dr. White was reared and received his formal education in Texas. After completing his public schooling, he entered the military and distinguished himself with service in the southwest Pacific and Korean theaters. He completed his college degree at Sul Ross College. He earned his Educational Specialist degree from New Mexico State University and a doctorate from Utah State University. He was a teacher, coach, and school administrator in Terrell County, Texas. In 1956, he was selected to be the Superintendent of Schools for Balmorhea Independent School District in Texas.

The position of School Planning Coordinator for the Clark County School District was offered to him. He, along with his wife Betty and their three children, came to Nevada. He advanced to Director of Educational Planning, and served nineteen years as Associate Superintendent for Facilities and Transportation Services before being appointed to the position of Deputy Superintendent. He directed literally thousands of skilled and professional employees into a team responsible for building more than 40 new schools. He was a prime supporter of strategic planning and master planning for our future.

The school bearing his name was dedicated on March 18th, 1993 in honor of his vision, integrity and the ideals he has given to the generations that use Thurman White Middle School. His ability to lead and share continues to inspire and motivate our teachers and students as Dr. and Mrs. White often join us for special events at school. We are honored and grateful to be called the Thurman White Challengers.
