Varsity Quiz Q and A

Question: What is Varsity Quiz?

Answer: Varsity Quiz is a interscholastic Knowledge match between two high schools. The “match” has three rounds, and usually takes around 30 minutes to complete. The match format is as follows:

Round One: Top 25: no time limit

There will be 25 questions in the first round worth 5 points each for a total possible of 125 points. This round will not be played against the clock; however, players must ring in within 5 seconds from the completion of the question. If the first answer is incorrect, the other team must ring in immediately after the first answer is declared incorrect. Otherwise, the question will be answered by the moderator and no points will be awarded. Once the student has rung in, he/she must wait for the moderator to call their school name and their name.

Round Two: Toss-Up/Bonus:6 minute time limit

A 5 point Toss-Up question will be asked. The team that correctly answers the Toss-Up question will be given a Bonus question with a two part answer. The team is given 10 seconds to discuss the question and the team captain must answer for the team. Each correct answer to the Bonus question is worth 5 points (for a total of 10 points). This round will be a 6 minute timed round.

Round Three: Speed Round:6 minute time limit*

The clock will be set for 6 minutes and questions will be worth 5 points each. Teams will have 3 seconds to ring in. If an answer is incorrect, the other team must immediately ring in to have an opportunity to answer. There are no set number of questions in this round, and questions will continue until the 6 minute time limit. When a player has rung in, he/she must wait until the name caller has identified the name of their school and his/her name before answering.

*For TV Matches, the length of this round will be adjusted as time allows.

Question: What are the Varsity Quiz rules?

1. Times

Teams should arrive 15 minutes prior to the time scheduled for their match. Teams must wait quietly in the assigned area until called. No one connected with any team other than those playing the particular game may watch other games.

2. Forfeitures

A team, consisting of at least (4) four team members and a coach or school staff member, must be present and ready to play no later than 15 minutes after the scheduled starting time for a game. They will forfeit the game if they arrive past this time unless school bus transportation was at fault. A coach and/or school staff member from the teams’ school must be present during the entire game or a forfeiture will be made. If both teams have 5 players, the match will be played with 5 players.

3. Student Managers

Each team should have a student manager who will be responsible for score keeping at all games. This person should be familiar with scoring methods and equipment used during the game.

4. Dress Code

Coaches will be responsible for the physical appearance of their students. Students are representing their schools and should be dressed appropriately. (Channel 10 requests that white tops not be worn for TV games.)

5. Name Cards

Coaches will be responsible for providing name cards for all matches.

6. Substitutions

Coaches may substitute players at the end of each round during a game.

7. Answers

The first answer will be considered as the intended answer. Players may not ramble and give multiple ideas and/or answers in the hope that one of the elements will be accepted.

8. Protests

No protests involving the content of questions may be filed. Protests may be filed on violations of regulations or on answers. Only coaches can protest at the end of that round. These protests can be on matters concerning signaling of answers, mouthing answers, or in any way prompting a player. As with all matters, they will be settled by the Coordinator, Judge(s), and the Moderator.

9. Tie Scores at the End of the Game

If the score is tied at the end of the third round, a tie breaker will take place. The tie breaker will be speed round questions and will continue until one team answers three questions. No substitutions will be allowed before the tie breaker. This procedure is the same for school and TV matches.

10. Last Question

When the bell rings marking the end of the game, a question currently being read will be finished and an opportunity given to respond to the question.

11. Sportsmanship

Good sportsmanship must be demonstrated at all times. Any form of providing assistance to the players by the audience or other team members such as mouthing answers, hand signals, or failure to wait in the assigned waiting area until called will result in a forfeiture. Talking or creating a disturbance by the audience during game play will cause either removal of the offenders or a forfeiture for that team. During team questions, the team not answering shall not talk or otherwise disturb the other team.

12. Tie Records at the End of the Regular Season

In case of a tie record, the winner of the match in which the teams played head-to-head will be declared the winner. In case of a 3-way division tie in which winners cannot be determined based upon head-to-head season matches, a round 1 playoff among the 3 teams will be scheduled. Total playoff points will determine placement if not determined by playoff win/loss record.

Question: What do we do for TV matches?

Congratulations are in order for your team for making the playoffs! The reward for making the playoffs is your upcoming appearance on KLVX TV, Channel 10. Since you’ll be on TV, there are some things to be aware of:

Student Information Cards

Every student playing in a TV game must provide an information card to Channel 10 with the following information:

· Student name (with phonetic pronunciation)

· School

· Grade

· Interests, hobbies, clubs of which you are a member. Feel free to brag, but do not include the fact that you like to gargle, collect belly lint, or that you are an active member in the Cheese whiz of the Month club!

· Awards/Honors: This is your 15 minutes of fame so don't be shy!

Future Plans: Include which college you plan to attend and major if you know it.

Tips for Televised Matches

Please dress appropriately for TV games. Avoid white shirts and blouses. Team outfits are great.

School coaches should identify and communicate to the moderator your starters about 15 minutes prior to taping time.
