Founded by Dr. Priscilla Rocha, the Gang Alternative Program (GAP) offers at-risk students extracurricular opportunities to engage in positive community activities that enhance their knowledge of their cultural heritage.

Mariachi Azteca <mariachiazteca.org> seeks to enrich the lives of our diverse population by promoting the educational enhancement of mariachi music through performance at cultural events.  The roots of mariachi go back hundreds of years.  It was the music of country people, music that celebrated the joys, the struggles and the triumphs of the Mexican people.  Mariachi was a version of Spanish theatrical orchestra including violins, guitars, and a harp.  Groups were small and not generally known outside the region from which they came.  Mariachi Azteca is led by Mr. Fernando Aguilar.

Ballet Folklorico Xyachimal <http://xyachimal.com/index.html> is dedicated to the preservation of the Mexican culture through the art of dance.  The educational dance program includes an overview of the authentic and original music, steps, and choreographies of Mexican folkloric tradition.  The group performs at community events and participates in community service activities.  Xyachimal promotes youth participation in a fun and disciplined atmosphere.  Under the direction of Ulises Espitia, the dance troupe has won numerous awards including first place in the International Ballet Folklorico Challenge USA three years in a row.

For more information, contact Dr. Esther Vargas, program coordinator, Fernando Aguilar, or Ulises Espitia at 799-6478, ext. 5815.  Please leave a message with staff, and your call will be returned.
