Trustee Board Member
Kevin L. Child He was elected in Nov. 2014 to serve as Clark County School District (CCSD) trustee for District D, and will represent the nearly 50,000 students of south central Las Vegas and parts of North Las Vegas. In a sense, he is following in the footsteps of his father, who was president of an Illinois school board in the early 1970s.
Child graduated from Bonanza High School in 1980 and works as a broker salesman with Barrett and Company Inc. Realtors of Las Vegas. He has volunteered in many capacities, including serving as a Clark County volunteer firefighter for three years.
During his campaign in 2014, Child called about 6,000 people in District D to not only seek their votes but also learn about their concerns. Taxpayers expressed interest in student achievement, transparency and accountability. In an effort to learn more about his constituents, Child has visited more than 40 of the 50-plus schools in his district.
In addition to greater transparency, Child wants to see more parental involvement in the education of Clark County students. Child’s stepdaughter graduated from Valley High School and is now 32, and he has continued to stay involved in the school district as a volunteer with Professionals And Youth Building a Commitment (PAYBAC). Through this program, Child shares with local students the message to continue their education, set goals and plan for the future.
As the newest member of the school board, Child is in a position to learn many new things about the inner workings of the school district. He said a new person always brings a new perspective to the playing field, adding that he loves a challenge, especially when advocating for a student. Child aims to build strong, effective relationships with not only the educational community but also his many constituents.
Child described CCSD as having some of the best schools in the nation, while noting there is always room for improvement. He is confident that trustees can continue moving the district forward and ensuring that students get the best possible education. Child said he aims to help put CCSD into the top 25 of school district rankings within the next four years.
