School Zone Safety

It's up to all of us to ensure our kids feel safe getting to and from school.

Throughout the school year, please remember these important laws in school zones:

  • U-turns are illegal in school zones
  • Double parking and blocking crosswalks are prohibited
  • Always obey the posted speed limit and pay close attention to flashing school zone lights
  • Stop whenever you see a school bus with flashing red lights or its stop-arm extended

School Zone Enforcement (CCSDPD)

The CCSDPD Traffic Bureau is focused on ensuring the safety of students, staff, and the community through proactive traffic enforcement, school zone safety operations, and education initiatives. The bureau helps to enforce the following laws in school zones:

  • Reduced speed limits when zone signs are flashing
    • School zones are active 30 minutes before school starts and 30 minutes after school ends
    • Many schools do not have flashing lights, and are considered ACTIVE when 2 or more students are present within that timeframe.
  • No U-turns in active school zones
  • No stopping in bus loading zones
  • No parking in designated school zone areas during enforcement hours
  • Traffic violations on school district property
  • Moving and parking violations in active school zones
  • Traffic violations at active bus stops (when buses are loading/unloading)
  • School-related traffic incidents involving students or staff

School crossing guards are managed and funded by city and county governments, not CCSD. Guards are employed by third-party companies contracted by municipalities.
